Melbourne Zoo Day Out - With Bento Lunchboxes
We took the boys on an outing to Melbourne Zoo the other day. We all had a memorable day and the boys are still talking about all the animals. I took along some Bento Lunches for the boys in these cute new plates I found with lids, so it's like a meal at home, but out and about!
When Mr 3 saw the two boxes, he insisted the blue would be his, so the yellow belonged to Mr 20 months! Included in their lunches were Avocado and Jam Sandwiches, Grapes and Cucumbers.
My personal favorite animals of the day were the Meercats! I know, not as grand as the elephants, or regal as the lions, but I just thought they were incredibly cute all cuddled up together - like a big family!
How cute are these Lemurs? Looks like they are almost holding hands and we just loved their big fluffy tails!
The Tigers are always an impressive sight. Unfortunately, I don't have the best quality camera (as you can tell!) so this was the best of the ones I captured of one of the tigers!
The Melbourne Zoo Butterfly House is an incredible sight to see. You walk into a hot house and are surrounded by hundreds of butterflies of all shapes, sizes and colors.
If you're still, a butterfly may land on your hand!
The boys were so excited to see the Elephants.
While we were there, the Zoo Keepers had the Elephants paint Elephant Statues which are sold to raise Money for Elephant Conservation. It was so incredible to watch them splashing about like a toddler with a paintbrush! We found it amazing how the Elephant held the paintbrush with the end of their trunk.
Another favorite of the boys were The Giraffes and The Zebras. And we asked them - is the Zebra black with white stripes or white with black stripes? You decide!
Being in Australia, Melbourne Zoo has an extensive Australian Animal exhibit. Including Kangaroos.... (who were all resting in the shade when we visited!)
And Emu's...
And... Mr 3 was extremely excited to see "Koala Bears" (they aren't really bears... but try explain that to a 3 year old!). I loved them too. So cute, fluffy and cuddly looking.
The boys were so hungry from wandering around and seeing all the animals that they sped through their Bento Lunchboxes like greedy little animals!
Needless to say they were both completely exhausted and went to sleep really early that night. Much to the relief of their exhausted parents!

so healthy bentos! I prefer to bring snacks out on trips like these too.. so convenient and cheaper than what's found in theme parks, zoos etc.

@caite - yes they are too cute!
@ai - Mr 3 is so fussy that if I want him eating something at least a little healthy it means taking food with me or he'll just eat chips and more chips!
Bento boxes are the best!
I'm more impressed with your organization than even the animals.

Thanks for sharing all the wonderful pictures of the animals, while a zoo can never replicate the wild, in these days on encroaching poaching it does offer a safe refuge and build a bond between inhabitants of our shared planet.
PS love the lunch boxes and (vegan) ingredients avocado with jam is a new combination one I wouldn't have thought of but the boys seem to love.
great lunches!!
Sometimes I feel like my house is a zoo.

We don't have elephants anymore at the Toronto Zoo. :( They moved to California.
